Canadian Notarized Documents for Use in Türkiye

Canadian notarized documents and powers of attorney for Türkiye: where the notary sits decides the office, and why commissioners do not count.

A power of attorney signed in Canada for a property sale or an inheritance in Türkiye is a notarized document, and in Canada the place of notarization decides which office apostilles it.

A document notarized in Manitoba, New Brunswick, Newfoundland and Labrador, the Northwest Territories, Nova Scotia, Nunavut, Prince Edward Island or Yukon goes to Global Affairs Canada, no matter where the original was issued. Documents notarized in the five provinces with their own authority go to that province.

Notary, not commissioner

The provincial offices are strict about the notary's capacity. British Columbia and Saskatchewan both require the document to be signed, dated and sealed by a notary public of their province, who may be a lawyer or a non-lawyer, and neither authenticates documents signed in the capacity of a commissioner for taking affidavits or another non-notary designation. British Columbia adds that the notary should already be on file with its office.

Alberta accepts powers of attorney and similar documents only as a notarized copy made by an Alberta notary public. Ontario's office has no in-house notary, so notarization by an Ontario notary public happens before the request.

Quebec works differently. The copy is requested from the notary who produced the original act, and an authenticity certificate is also obtained from the Chambre des notaires.

Agree the wording with the Turkish side before the appointment; a Turkish authority decides whether the power of attorney covers the transaction.

In Ankara

With the apostille, the document is translated into Turkish by sworn translators in Türkiye, and a Turkish notary certifies the translation where required. The table shows the office for each jurisdiction we have verified.
