Marriage in Türkiye: Foreign Documents You Need

A foreign national who wants to marry in Türkiye applies to a Turkish marriage office. Under the Marriage Regulation, applications by foreigners are accepted by the marriage registrar, and the rules that apply to Turkish citizens apply to foreigners as well. Where one spouse is a foreign national, municipal marriage offices and the civil registry directorates are authorised to perform the marriage.

The certificate of no impediment

The key foreign document is the certificate of capacity to marry. The regulation accepts a document issued by the competent central authorities of the foreigner's state, or by its local representations, that shows the person's name, surname, parents' names and date of birth and whether there is any impediment to the marriage, and that has been certified in the proper way. Documents issued by honorary consulates are not accepted.

The foreign national is expected to obtain this certificate personally from the authorities of their own state. Only where that is not possible may the marriage registrar request it through the General Directorate.
